SIERRA NEGRA VOLCANO
HOUR: 7:30 am TO 1:30 pm.

The Tour
The Sierra Negra Volcano is one of the five active volcanoes on Isabela Island and home to the second largest volcanic caldera in the world, measuring nearly 10 km in diameter. Located in the southern part of the island, it’s the only volcano in the Galápagos open to visitors. The hike begins on the southern side and follows the eastern rim of the caldera, offering panoramic views of the immense volcanic landscape. The trail continues to the northeast, where the path descends toward Volcán Chico, a secondary crater surrounded by solidified lava fields and active fumaroles emitting steam from deep underground. This otherworldly terrain offers a unique opportunity to experience the raw volcanic power of the islands—many say it feels like walking on the Moon.
