Mines of Sulphur

HOUR: 7:15 TO 1:00 pm.

The Tour

This fascinating tour begins at the authorized point known as “La Cadena,” from where an 8 km hike leads to the edge of the impressive Sierra Negra volcano crater. Along the way, visitors are immersed in a unique natural environment, surrounded by native flora such as wild guava trees and ferns, while the fauna comes to life with sightings of lava lizards and Darwin’s mockingbirds. From the crater’s edge, the trail descends approximately 2.5 to 3 km into the volcano, where the striking sulfur mines are located—rock formations created by the cooling of sulfurous gases through ancient volcanic vents. This wide-open area offers an unparalleled view of both the main Sierra Negra crater and the crater of the sulfur mines, all within a landscape that is equally captivating for its constantly changing weather.
