Española

ocated approximately 2 hours south of San Cristóbal is Española Island. The flat profile of the island is unexpected, since Española is an island of volcanic origin like Santa Cruz or Isabela. Over the ages (estimated age is 3.3 million years), the crater eroded to its present appearance. The long and sometimes quite bumpy boat ride (at least in a north-south direction) is worth it from the moment you arrive at Punta Suarez.

Endemic reddish-green marine iguanas and Galapagos sea lions already welcome you on the small stone pier, built for a dry landing with the zodiac. The hiking trail is 1.6 km long and displays many endemic species such as the Española Mockingbird, or the Galapagos Falcon. Different types of finches, blue footed boobies and Nazca boobies can be found. The nesting season for the Waved Albatross from April to December is especially fantastic. They mate, nest, and raise their chicks only on Española Island, never touching any other land despite cross-ocean flights. Another highlight along the way is “El Soplador”, a 25m water fountain produced by the waves of the sea that hit the cracks in the island’s cliff with great pressure, gushing out through a lava tunnel.

After lunch sail to “Lower Gardner” to dive or snorkel. Lower Gardner is a shallow area between Gardner Island and Osborn Island. It is just a small bump that is the starting point of the dives. Currents used to be strong and visibility good. The site offers a lot of activity in general: Eagle rays, golden rays, barracuda, bat fish, turtles, sea lions, white tip sharks, Galapagos sharks and sometimes even hammerhead sharks!
